Strike:ASUU strike nears end as details of FG’s meeting with union emerge

The Federal Government says it has released N163 billion to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund)

Sen. Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment, said this while addressing newsmen after a closed-door reconciliatory meeting with ASUU leadership on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the striking lecturers had embarked on strike on Nov. 5, 2018, to press home their demands.

ASUU demands included some areas of understanding in the implementation of the Memorandum of Action agreed to in 2017.

Some of these areas include shortfall in salaries of some Federal Universities’ workers and lecturers, earned allowances, revitalisation that were part of the 2009 agreement, among others.

According to Ngige, “today we have agreed to fund revitalisation.

“Government has released about N163 billion from TETFund account to universities.

“So, we have gotten some substantial agreement in most of the areas of the agreement.”

“Most of the issues have being resolved, so they are going to go back to their members and present government’s offer to their council,‘’ he said.

Ngige also said that the striking lecturers were not asking for N50 billion before they would call off the strike.

He, however, added that if the total amount of the union’s demand was aggregated it would be more than the N50 billion as the government was paying in different compartments.

“These are debts of 2009, owed by the past administration, that is 2009 to 2012, so it is not our own debt and we have been doing a lot to settle these debts.

“So, we will be reconvening at the instance of ASUU, they said they want to go and consult with their members and they cannot call off the strike without consulting with their members,’’ he said.

Earlier, the minister had said that President Muhammadu Buhari had mandated him to ensure that all issues concerning the ongoing strike in the university system were resolved.

“The president has directed me to pass the night here until all issues that have kept our children away from schools are resolved and strike called off.

“He has also directed me to impress upon you, the imperative of little sacrifice from all sides, knowing fully well that the revenue of the federation has dwindled from what it was before the present administration assumed office,” he said.

Ngige further said President Buhari was greatly worried about the situation in the university system, hence his steady and holistic approach to tackling the rot through adequate funding.

He said, “Mr president told me to assure you of his determination to reposition our universities as he would do everything possible to cast the present challenges in our tertiary education to dustbin of history.

Also, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, ASUU President, said that there were still some grey areas in the proposal presented by the Federal Government.

He said the union would look at the grey areas and would get back to the government.

“The most critical area is the revitalisation, because it is central to our work, as academics and unless that area is addressed our members will have issues with ongoing action.

“We also did not ask for N50 billion, we are saying that the minimum we expect government to release in order to reactive the revitalisation fund is N50 billion.

“So, the strike is still on,’’ he said.

JAMB Registered over 300,000 In Seven Days

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) says it has registered over 300,000 candidates for its 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination in one week. The Board’s Head, Media and Information, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.

Benjamin said that this was coming a week after the commencement of the registration exercise. NAN reports that the board commenced registration of candidates for the 2019 all Computer Based Test (CBT) on Jan.10 and it would close on Feb. 21.

According to him, the registration so far has been seamless, and the board is happy with the development. “We are happy with the way the process is going; we hope it will continue this way. “So far, we have registered over 300,000 candidates as at Thursday.

“We are happy there have not been issues because so far, there is just a tiny gap between the number of candidates that have acquired the e-pin and that of those that have registered,” he said. Meanwhile JAMB had insisted that all candidates with issues of biometrics must go over to Abuja for it to be rectified.

“I want to reiterate the fact that only the Registrar of the board has the sole right to attend to such issues. “Any candidate who may have issues with the capturing of his or her finger prints at their respective points of registration will need to come down to our office in Abuja.

“This will require the Chief Executive to do it himself for the purpose of security,” Benjamin said. This, however, was contrary to calls by some stakeholders urging the board to set up special centres in every state of the country to tackle issues.

EPL: Victor Moses gives conditions to join Fenerbahce from Chelsea

Chelsea winger, Victor Moses is ready to join Fenerbahce unless he is handed 200,000 euros by the Turkish giants if he helps the Istanbul club avoid relegation this season.

According to Fotspor, Moses also wants to be compensated for the loss of his image if Fenerbahce are demoted.

The Super Lig side are currently on the 17th position in the Turkey top-flight league table with 16 points from 17 games.

Moses, who still has two years remaining in his current deal with Chelsea, has also drawn interests from Cardiff City, Crystal Palace and Fulham in recent weeks.

The player has fallen out of favour at Chelsea since the Blues manager, Maurizio Sarri took over from fellow Italian, Antonio Conte early this season.
The ex-Nigerian international has barely featured for Sarri’s side so far this campaign.

The 28-year-old was not even named in the Chelsea squad that defeated Newcastle United 2-1 in the Premier League encounter on Saturday at Stamford Bridge.

ASUU strike: Lecturers give fresh conditions

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has said the only condition to suspend the ongoing nationwide strike is for the Federal Government to pay, at least, N50 billion Revitalisation Fund; out of one tranche of N220 billion.
ASUU national Chairman, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi spoke to newsmen in Ibadan, Oyo State on Sunday, ahead of the union’s scheduled meeting with the federal government on Monday.

ASUU said that the federal government must also present concrete evidence of implementation of the promised N20 billion Earned Academic Allowances (EAA) and how the balance of N85 billion would be paid; with timelines.

He pointed out that the union and government since the strike started, “have had seven meetings. We have been having promises. We have demanded that some of their promises, which we took back to our members, some items on their list, have been rejected.

“And, there have been demands for the review. We want them to pay, immediately, N50 billion as a sign of commitment this quarter and, for the next three quarters, the government can pay N50 billion each quarter.

“So, our members have rejected the N20 billion they proposed that will be spread over two quarters in 2019. Our members have insisted on the release of at least N50 billion.

In relation to EAA, which they have an outstanding N105 billion, our members are saying even if you (government) are releasing N20 billion, let it be stated clearly that it is only for ASUU members and the balance which you promised to pay in four instalments, attach timelines to the balance and figures.

“In 2017, this government promised to mainstream the EAA into the budget so that we won’t be coming to talk about arrears. If government had put that into the 2018 budget, we would not be talking about arrears now.

“Our members are saying government should take steps, mainstream it into the 2019 budget and that is note late because they (National Assembly) are still working on the budget.”

He added, “We have gone beyond these promises. In fact, the first meeting we had, we were told that before the end of the week, the matter would be resolved. But, that was government speaking. After that first meeting, we have had some other six meetings, yet, we are still relating to promises.

“We don’t really take government’s promises seriously again because we have heard promises upon promises.

“What our members told us when we were starting this meeting, was, ‘come back with concrete evidence of implementation.’

“And, we have told them (government) in clear terms. By the way, let me also tell you that today, we are meeting again, and we are still hoping that concrete evidence on implementation will be put on the table.

“So, that is what our members have been talking about. The National Executive Council of ASUU is our principal, and, each time we engage government, we keep reminding them that our members said or our NEC said ‘don’t come back to us unless you have concrete evidence of implementation.’ So, on that, we stand.”

Breaking: IG orders immediate disbandment of FSARS

The Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has ordered the immediate disbandment of the Federal SARS, Special Investigation Panel and Special Tactical Squad.

Channels TV reports that the IGP announced this on Monday, January 21, at his inaugural conference with commissioners of police and other senior officers in Abuja.

Details of the new development are still sketchy as at the time of filing this report.

However, it may be recalled Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, directed the then IGP, Ibrahim Idris, to immediately overhaul the management and activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Osinbajo said that based on the persistent complaints and reports on the activities of SARS that border on allegations of human rights violations, there should be overhaul of the management and activities of SARS to ensure that any unit that would emerge from the process should be intelligence-driven.
Following Osinbajo's order, the former inspector general of police, Idris, followed suit with a new arrangement to address complaints and allegations on human rights violations against some of the personnel of the special operatives.

According to a statement released in the evening of Tuesday, August 14, by Ag. DCP Jimoh Moshood, the then public relations officer of the force, the former police chief renamed the operatives as Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS). Idris, as part of the new arrangements, also appointed a new commissioner of police as the overall head of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad nationwide.

NANS reacts to FG’s reduction of JAMB, NECO fees, speaks on ASUU strike

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), on Thursday, applauded the Federal Government for reducing the cost of JAMB and NECO application forms.

the Federal Government, after the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, announced the reduction in JAMB fee from N5,000 to N3,500 for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The amount charged for Senior Secondary Certificate Examination by the National Examination Council (NECO) was also reduced from 11,350 to N9,850 and Basic Education Certificate handled by NECO was slashed from N5,500 to N4,000.

The reductions take effect from January, 2019.

NANS’ National Public Relations Officer, Mr Bestman Okereafor, while reacting in a statement issued in Enugu on Thursday, commended the decision, NAN reports.

Okereafor, however, urged the Federal Government to prioritise the issue of education, and especially the ongoing ASUU/COEASU strike.

According to him, the strike has truncated the chances of “some of our compatriots graduating in 2018, simply because the academic calendar has been altered”.

The statement continued: “NANS considers this decision as a good and progressive minded one, but strongly believes that resolving the ongoing ASUU/COEASU strikes would be better.

“We are of the opinion that schools must be made conducive for all students on campuses as it was in the days of old.

“The Presidency must consider making our campuses a conducive atmosphere for learning and research purposes.

“It is highly disheartening that we have lost quite a handful of young, hardworking and promising Nigerian students to the cold hands of death due to the ongoing strike.

“Even as some of our students are now been exposed to various crimes, and drugs. For an idle hand they say is the devil’s workshop.’’

Okereafor, however, appealed to the leadership of ASUU not to frustrate the process of negotiation with the Federal Government, rather consider suspending the strike in the best interest of all concerned.

Eight things women are banned from wearing around the world

Women around the world are being punished, criminalized and shamed for wearing clothes that are deemed inappropriate by authorities, with restrictions in place from London to Khartoum.

Here's a list of some of the things women are not allowed to wear:

1. Flat shoes at Cannes

The film festival has been accused of "tyrannical fashion policing" after reports emerged that a group of women were turned away from a red-carpet premiere for not wearing high heels. The women, some of whom had medical conditions and were their 50's, were wearing rhinestone flats to the opening of Cate Blanchett's new film Carol when they told they would not be allowed to enter, reports The Guardian. Directors and insiders confirmed that the shoe policy was regularly enforced at the event, despite a claim from festival director Thierry Fremaux that the "rumours" were "unfounded". One Cannes regular told Screen Daily: "I've heard this happening several times now, even to older women who can’t wear heels for medical reasons. It's bulls***." The scandal comes as the annual festival attempts to address issues around gender equality and a push for greater female representation in the male-dominated film industry. "So much for the year of women," tweeted Times arts correspondent Jack Malvern.

2. A tuxedo in Louisiana

A school in Louisiana told straight-A student Claudetteia Love she is not allowed to wear a tuxedo to her high school prom. "[The head teacher] said that the faculty told him they weren't going to work the prom if girls were going to wear tuxes," her mother Geraldine Jackson told regional newspaper The News Star. “Those were his exact words: 'Girls wear dresses and boys wear tuxes, and that's the way it is’."

3. The veil in France

Last year, the European Court of Human Rights upheld France's ban on wearing the face veil, angering civil rights groups across the continent. Those behind the law argued that it encouraged citizens to "live together". The law makes it illegal for anyone to cover the face in a public space, and although it applies to balaclavas and helmets, critics say it is used to target Muslim women. "No matter what law is passed on the niqab, it will not stop me from wearing it," Semaa Abdulwali wrote in The Guardian. "I don’t want to be controlled and told what I can and cannot wear: that is oppression."

4. Miniskirts in Uganda

Ugandan president Yoweri Museveni signed an anti-pornography bill last year, which banned women from dressing "indecently". Dubbed ‘the mini skirt law’ by the local press, the legislation prevents women from revealing their thighs, breasts and buttocks. Campaigners say it has given men the excuse to criticize, humiliate and abuse women who don't follow the rules. "Now people are more free to do it openly. They are going to judge women according to what they see as indecent because there are no parameters defined by law,” Rita Achiro, executive director of the Uganda Women's Network told the BBC.

5. Lace underwear in Kazakhstan

Dozens of women protesting against a ban on lacy underwear were arrested in Kazakhstan a year ago. They were bundled into police vans while wearing underwear on the heads and shouting: "Freedom to panties!"

Since then, women in Kazakhstan, Russia and Belarus have been denied the right to choose their underwear, after a "draconian trade ban" was introduced, prohibiting the import, production or sale of synthetic lace underwear. Officials advised women to wear more breathable fabrics, like cotton, for better vaginal health, but campaigners said bureaucrats shouldn't be "poking into women's knickers", Australian newspaper Daily Life reported.

6. Red lipstick on the BBC

Television presenters on the BBC's children's television channel CBBC were banned from wearing red lip stick on air because it was too provocative. "We know that a lot of young girls will look at how our presenters are dressed, and they shouldn't look too sexy," said Melissa Hardinge, executive editor of CBBC Independents. Cosmopolitan's Bridget March responded: "While we applaud their concern, we don't know if censoring women's appearances is the way to fix it."

7. Leggings in the United States

In February, Republican lawmaker David Moore introduced a bill which would ban women from wearing "any device, costume, or covering that gives the appearance of or simulates the genitals, pubic hair, anus region, or pubic hair region". Similar rules have emerged across the US, with several schools banning girls from wearing yoga pants and other tight-fitting clothing that could "distract" boys. Such legislation sends the message that women's bodies are an "invitation for sexual aggression unless they cover up," wrote Tara Culp-Ressler in Think Progress.

8. Trousers in Sudan

Women and girls in Sudan can be arrested by police and sentenced to public flogging for wearing trousers or leaving their hair uncovered, reported Amnesty International's Amal Habani. The country's public order laws are applied arbitrarily to the detriment of women and girls and fail to adhere to Sudan’s human rights obligations, she said. In 2012, Habani was detained, beaten and tortured by police for demanding that Sudanese women be given the right to choose what they wear.

What do you think Nigerian ladies should be banned from wearing?

Senators Sign Agreement Against Removal Of Saraki, Ekweremadu

Forty-eight senators have signed an agreement to forestall any impeachment process against Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu.
This followed the seige at the National Assembly on Tuesday. In the list obtained by DAILY POST, the Senators said they will resist any illegal change of leadership of the Senate.
However, Senator Ben Bruce has revealed plans to move against those he called “anti-democratic” agents. He said this while condemning the invasion of the National Assembly by security agencies.
This platform had reported the massive reinforcement at the entry, exit and within the premises. The lawmaker vowed that he and his collagues (pro-Saraki Senators), would report President Muhamadu Buhari, Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police, among others to the international community.
